What an OEM number actually means

An OEM number is a reference assigned by a vehicle or component manufacturer to identify a specific part or an approved version of that part. It is primarily an identification tool. It does not automatically prove that every product carrying that number is genuine, identical in quality or suitable for every vehicle variant.

Why verification matters

A single truck model can use different components depending on production year, engine, axle, gearbox, chassis configuration or market. For that reason, an OEM number should be checked together with the VIN, vehicle application, dimensions, technical drawing or a sample whenever possible.

Where to find the reference

Common sources include the old part, original packaging, an electronic parts catalogue, dealer documentation, workshop records and the vehicle manufacturer’s system. Photographs can help, but appearance alone is not a reliable identification method.

A safe sourcing checklist

Before requesting a quotation, provide the complete reference, brand, vehicle model, production year, quantity and destination. For critical or easily confused parts, also provide the VIN, measurements and clear photos of markings and connection points.
